December 2005

Multiculturalism is our best defence

Debunking Myths about Muslims in Australia

December 2005

Since the events of September 11, 2001, Bali in October 2002 and London in 2005, the religion of Islam has consistently been associated with terrorism. It is a dangerous oversimplification to confuse people of the Muslim faith with terrorism. Words like ‘jihad,’ names like Osama bin Laden and organisations such as Al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiah (JI) have come to overshadow what is actually a religion of many perspectives, whose teachings embrace peace, human rights and tolerance.

Here, The Edmund Rice Centre challenges some of the common misconceptions about Muslim Australians and Islam.

The legality of detention as a derrerent

August 2005

Mandatory detention is often claimed to be a deterent - a way of deterring would be asylum seekers from coming to Australia. However, a number of lawyers have questioned the legality of using mandatory detention for this purpose. A statement, developed by A Just Australia, has been signed by a number of Australian lawyers. AJA is currently asking other law professionals who agree with the statement to contact us so we can add your name to the list.
