AJA welcomes ALP refugee policy reform

National refugee campaign group, A Just Australia, welcomes the policy
direction taken at the first day of the Australian Labor Party National
Conference. Delegates voted to abolish the use of Temporary Protection
Visas, as well as recognising the need to develop guidelines to abolish
the arbitrary time limits that restrict work rights for asylum seekers.

"This is the kind of forward thinking, sensible reform that Australia
needs for refugee policy. It shows that we can have policies that protect
the integrity of a controlled migration system, that are also humane. We
welcome Labor's commitment to the traditional Australian values of a
fair-go for all." said Kate Gauthier, National Coordinator of A Just
Australia, observer at the conference.

A Just Australia believes this policy reform shows that Labor is listening
to the community as well as expert advocates.

"The overturning of temporary protection shows that Labor has paid
attention to the evidence, that this policy was ineffective in stopping
asylum boats and did nothing but penalise proven refugees. They have
recognised there is no point in continuing a policy that has only negative
impacts." said Ms Gauthier.

"Additionally, the government policy of denying work rights to some asylum
seekers has not had their desired effect of reducing numbers of onshore
asylum seekers but instead has had strong negative impacts particularly on
asylum seeking families with small children. We welcome Labor's commitment
to finding solutions for refugees in our communities."
